More people died from suicide in Japan in October than from coronavirus in all of 2020, CNN reports.

Last month, 2,153 Japanese committed suicide, and 2,087 people have become victims of COVID-19 since the pandemic began.

"We didn't even have a lockdown, and the impact of Covid is very minimal compared to other countries ... but still we see this big increase in the number of suicides," said Michiko Ueda, an associate professor at Waseda University in Tokyo, and an expert on suicides.

"That suggests other countries might see a similar or even bigger increase in the number of suicides in the future."

In Japan, cases of suicide have increased significantly among women. In October, the number of suicides among women in the country rose by almost 83% compared to the same month. For comparison, among men, this figure is 22%.

The WHO says Japan is one of the leaders in the number of suicides in the world.
