Indonesian Parliament issues statement on the Khojaly genocide

The chairperson of the Indonesia-Azerbaijan Parliamentary Friendship Group, Muhammad Iqbal, issued a statement on behalf of the group on the occasion of the 29th anniversary of the Khojaly genocide.

The Embassy of Azerbaijan in Indonesia spreads the information.

The statement said that on the night of February 25-26, 1992, a massacre of civilians took place in the Azerbaijani city of Khojaly, killing 613 people, including 106 women, 63 children, and 70 elderly. Hundreds of people were seriously injured and 275 captured.

The group emphasizes that the Khojaly massacre is a black spot in human history, and the organizers of this horror should be punished. The group paid tribute to the memory of the Khojaly massacre victims in the Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan 29 years ago with deep sorrow and regret, which is the darkest page in the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict. The group members expressed their deepest condolences to the family members of those killed during the genocide and the Azerbaijani people.

The group considered it necessary to honor the memory of those killed in Khojaly and to recall the incident so that such a horrible crime committed against humanity would never be repeated anywhere on earth. The group also believes that Khojaly victims are reminding everyone of the value of peace.

The statement also sees the 29th anniversary of the Khojaly massacre as an opportunity to launch a new international effort to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The group called on Armenia to comply with UN Security Council Resolutions 822, 853, 874, and 884 to withdraw troops from the occupied territories of Azerbaijan and return millions of Azerbaijani refugees home.
