A minute of silence was observed in memory of those killed in an earthquake and natural disaster in Japan 10 years ago. Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga and Emperor Naruhito attended the ceremony in Tokyo with his wife, Empress Masako. Due to the pandemic, the number of participants was limited. Last year’s ceremony got postponed due to the coronavirus.

A minute of silence was also observed in the affected prefectures of Fukushima, Iwate, and Miyagi. Residents brought flowers to the memorial. At exactly 14:46 in the afternoon, everything stopped and fell silent at the time of the 2011 earthquake.

A strong earthquake in northeastern Japan on March 11, 2011, triggered a powerful tsunami that damaged the Fukushima nuclear power plant. As a result of the tragedy, 22.2 thousand people died and went missing.
