New airport opens in Berlin

After multiple postponements of opening, the new Willy Brandt Berlin-Brandenburg International Airport (BER) starts operating in Germany, DW reports.

Following the newspaper, the construction began in 2006.

Under the original plans, the airport was to be commissioned in October 2011.

Due to various technical and construction flaws, especially in fire safety, the BER opening dates were postponed six times.

In 2013, up to 120,000 defects were identified, including an inoperative fire protection system, thousands of automatic doors without an electrical connection, and sagging parking ceilings.

It took eight years to fix the defects. As a result, the construction estimate increased from 2 to 7 billion euros.
