On Wednesday, August 11, on the Italian island of Sicily, a new temperature record was set by meteorologists, + 48.8 ° C.

"On August 11, under the influence of an abnormal heatwave of African origin on the island of Sicily (Italy), the maximum air temperature reached + 48.8 ° C," meteorologists said.

The information was officially confirmed by the local agrometeorological center (Servizio Informativo Agrometeorologico Siciliano).

Thus, during the whole period of instrumental observations, this figure became a record not only for Italy but for the whole of Europe.

The previous record for maximum air temperature (+ 48.0 ° C) was set on July 10, 1977, in Athens (Greece).
