OSCE calls for peace talks between Azerbaijan, Armenia

The Co-Chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group (Igor Popov of the Russian Federation, Stephane Visconti of France, and Andrew Schofer of the United States of America) made the following statement regarding the Armenia-Azerbaijan border clashes earlier this morning:

"The Co-Chairs view with concern reports of large scale military actions along the Line of Contact in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone. We strongly condemn the use of force and regret the senseless loss of life, including civilians. The Co-Chairs call on the sides to cease hostilities immediately and resume negotiations for the conflict's sustainable resolution,'' the official website reports.

The Co-Chairs call on the sides to take all necessary measures to stabilize the situation on the ground and reiterate that there is no alternative to a peaceful negotiated solution of the conflict.

Tensions have been observed at the Azerbaijan-Armenia border since the early morning. Azerbaijani media say that Armenia carried out a large-scale attack this morning and killed peaceful citizens.

Azerbaijani Defense Ministry reports that Azerbaijani troops opened fire in response.
