Pentagon confirmed information that the US Department of Defense killed Qasem Soleimani in a military operation. General Soleimani was Major General in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and commander of its Quds Force, a division responsible for extraterritorial military and clandestine operations, which was included in the list of terrorist organizations by the United States. The rocket struck near Baghdad airport in Iraq.

"According to the order of US President Donald Trump, our military took effective defensive measures to protect Americans abroad and killed General Qasem Soleimani. He was planning attacks on US diplomats and military personnel in Iraq and throughout the region," the Pentagon stated.

The military operation took place on Wednesday evening. Attacks were carried out in the direction of Baghdad airport. Along with Soleimani, members of Iraq's Shiite group al-Hashd Ash-Shaabi died as well. During the operation, 12 Iraqi soldiers were wounded.

According to US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Soleimani led the work of Iranian military advisers in Iraq. He was also the commander of the Quds, which is responsible for military and intelligence, subversive activities outside Iran. Quds Force is directly under control of Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran.

The Pentagon has blamed the Quds Force and General Soleimani for the deaths of hundreds of US and coalition troops.

The situation in Iraq worsened after protesters stormed the US embassy on Tuesday. The protests followed US military operations against Shiite groups in Iraq and Syria.
