The Sunday Times writes that the disease 96.2 percent identical to SARS-CoV-2 infection was first registered in China in 2012.

The world’s closest known match to the Covid-19 virus was found seven years ago by Chinese scientists in an abandoned mine where it was linked to deaths of three out of six people caused by a coronavirus-type respiratory illness.

A week later, a group of scientists went to investigate a new mysterious, lethal disease.

Doctors noticed that all patients revealed symptoms of SARS-CoV-1, though none of them was proved positive for the infection. Three of the patients died, the other three recovered. The scientists discovered coronavirus protective antibodies in the recovered patients, which were similar to SARS-CoV-1 antibodies, though unknown to the scientists. As a result, the scientists found coronavirus named RaBtCov / 4991, which was later renamed to RaTG13.

Reportedly, the case did not cause a serious resonance; that is why there are very few publications related to the case. The fact that the disease was renamed causes doubts. According to the edition, the virus species are still stored in the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

Expert virologist, Shi Chen Lee, was heading the group, published an article in Nature magazine in 2020, in which he mentioned the genetically identical SARS-CoV-2 discovered in 2012.
