The amendments introduced into the constitution of the Russian Federation come into force effective today. The amendments refer to article 22 of the country's fundamental law, according to which Vladimir Putin is eligible to participate in presidential elections during the following two terms. Besides the above, the constitutional amendments consider a new allocation of responsibilities among the government branches, increasing the president's authority.
A minor scandal accompanied the process of coming into force of the innovation. The updated version of the constitution text was published in the internet portal under the title of "Constitution of the President of the Russian Federation." It was renamed after a certain period, though it is possible to find the original title in the archive base.
The polling process took place from June 25 through July 1. According to the Central Election Commission information, 77.92 percent of people voted for the changes, 21.27 percent were against. Voter turnout was 67.97 percent.
