António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, issued a New Year's address, summarizing the results for 2020 and talking about the organization's goals in 2021.
"2021 should become the year of healing after 2020, which was full of tragedy and tears," Guterres said.
He said the coronavirus pandemic had turned human lives upside down and brought suffering and sorrow to the world.
Secretary-General of the UN noted that the level of poverty, inequality, and hunger in the world is rising, together with unemployment and government debt.
"Nevertheless, 2020 has taught us that if people are united and in solidarity, the rays of hope will shine all over the world," Guterres stated.
He said climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic are crises that can only be overcome through unity.
