The President of Chile Sebastian Pinera announced the state of emergency.The decision was followed by the violent protests during which the protestors set fire to metro stations and the energy company.The protests, in turn, were followed by the transportation fare increase.
“The goal of the state of emergency is the maintenance of civil stability.We need to guarantee the security in the streets of Santiago.We will not accept any deterioration of public and private property” – Pinera said.
The President once more noted that the transportation fare increase was inevitable since it was connected to the national currency devaluation. He thanked the citizens who shared and supported the decision made by the government.Pinera invokes the protesters to dialogue.
As a result of the confrontation between the protesters and the police 180 civil and 57 law-enforcers were injured.
