For the first time in history, a transgender woman has been appointed as Vice Prime Minister of Belgium. A 57-year-old, Petra De Sutter, is a member of the Green Party. The Brussels Times writes about her appointment.

The politician has been a member of the European Parliament for a year now, as well as a professor at Ghent University. Her specialty is gynecology. De Sutter actively fights for the rights of sexual minorities.

Petra De Sutter changed her gender at the age of 40.

"I was 40 years old when I decided to become a woman. Because of this, I lost colleagues and friends, but I gained a lot more. Not many were as lucky as me: I was hired, my partners accepted me, my other half also accepted me," De Sutter wrote on Twitter.
