In England, 26,234 hospital patients have died from the virus – up 185 from yesterday’s tally.

Patients in England were aged between 28 and 99 - and five of them were considered healthy.

It makes today the lowest rise in deaths recorded on a Thursday in England for the last nine weeks - and is less than a quarter the jump recorded in English hospitals on April 10 (866), when the virus was at its peak.

The Department of Health said 37,837 people had died in hospitals, care homes and the wider community after testing positive for coronavirus in the UK as of 5pm on Wednesday, up by 377 from 37,460 the day before.

The figure for the number of people tested has been "temporarily paused to ensure consistent reporting" across all methods of testing.

Overall a total of 3,918,079 tests have been carried out and 269,127 cases have been confirmed positive.
