Doctors investigate a previously unknown brain disease that causes memory loss, hallucinations, and muscle atrophy in Canada.

The information about the disease became public after a warning letter from the New Brunswick Provincial Public Health Agency for doctors published in the press. The Ministry of Health called on doctors to be especially careful when registering cases of unknown diseases. The letter of recommendation referred to symptoms similar to the deadly disease of Creutzfeldt-Jakob, which causes the head and spinal cord injuries.

There have been 43 cases of unknown disease detected in Canada. The deadly disease was first detected in 2015. In 2019, 11 people were diagnosed; in 2020, another 24 people became ill, five cases ended with death.

Patients experience pain, cramps, behavior changes, anxiety, or depression. Over the course of a year and a half, the symptoms progress, revealing cognitive disorders - gnashing of teeth, memory loss, and muscle atrophy. In some cases, hallucinations occur.

Most cases of the disease have been reported in the Acadian Peninsula and Moncton, New Brunswick.
