Venice celebrates 1600 years since the founding of the city on March 25.
According to legend, this city was founded on the water on March 25, 421, the day of the Annunciation, when the city's oldest church was supposedly built in honor of the Apostle Giacomo. It is located in the oldest part of the city - near the Rialto Bridge.
Venice is one of the most attractive destinations for tourists. Every year, before the pandemic, at least 20 million travelers from all over the world came to see it.
The city authorities decorated the Rialto Bridge with festive lights for the special date, which shines throughout the night. Due to quarantine, concerts and celebrations in the city were canceled. According to the Venice website, a liturgy will be held at the Saint Mark's Basilica. It will be attended only by invited residents of the city. Mass will be televised. In addition, at 16:00, all the cathedrals of Venice will ring the bell.
The city government decided to celebrate the city anniversary throughout the year. Mayor Luigi Brugnaro called for events dedicated to Venice to be celebrated worldwide until March 25, 2022. The municipality is ready to provide information to support such projects.
