The Ukrainian village of Novgorodske wants to change its name. According to the Committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Local Self-Government and Regional Development, the local administration proposes to call the village New York.

According to the chairperson of the committee, Andrei Klochko, the historical name of this village is New York. That was how it was called until 1951.

Currently, about 10 thousand people live in the village. The Dzerzhinsky Phenol Plant and the Phenol Railway Station are located on the spot.

The Mennonite Germans founded the village of New York on the territory of eastern Ukraine in the 18th century. They were invited to Russia by Catherine II. She allocated this land for their settlement. In the XIX century, the land of the village got transferred to the Golitsyn family.
