A painting by the famous artist Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890), "Street Scene in Montmartre," sold at auction in Paris for 16.2 million euros, the auction house Sotheby's reports.
According to the auction organizers, "the price of a painting depicting the Moulin de la Galette windmill has risen to 16.2 million euros in 10 minutes since the start of the auction." Sotheby's website mentions that the lot was sold for 16,251,000 euros. Its initial estimated cost was 5-8 million euros.
The painting, entitled "Street Scene in Montmartre," was created by the artist in 1887 while living in Paris with his brother Theo. After 1920, it was kept in a private collection, making it unknown to the general public.
