After a two-year hiatus, Volcano Kilauea on the Big Island of Hawaii woke up and erupted from the Halemaumau Crater overnight.
A magnitude 4.4 earthquake shook the disaster zone shortly after the volcano erupted. The volcano is located in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The island is home to 186 000 people.
Volcano Kilauea has been active from 1983 to 2018. For 25 years, serious damage has been done to nearby towns and settlements. In 2018, lava and ash rose to a height of 9 kilometers in the sky and damaged 700 houses. The hot lava covered an area about 24 meters high.
