Drinking coffee in the morning on an empty stomach worsens metabolism and may even cause diabetes. The scientists from the University of Bath in Great Britain revealed the information. British Journal of Nutrition publishes the study.

Twenty-nine healthy women and men participated in the experiment. They got divided into three groups. The first one slept as usual and drank a sweet drink in the morning, which was equal in calories to breakfast. The researchers woke up the second group once an hour and gave the same drink in the morning as the first group. The third group behaved similarly, although they were given black coffee half an hour before the sweet drink as a breakfast.

Blood tests of all three groups showed that the glucose content of those who drank coffee was 50% higher. Based on this, scientists have suggested that caffeine may cause insulin resistance.

"We know that almost half of us wake up in the morning and drink coffee before we do anything - intuitively, the more we get tired, the stronger the coffee gets," said Professor James Betts, Co-Director of the Centre for Nutrition, Exercise, and Metabolism at the University of Bath.

He says control over blood sugar levels breaks when the body first takes a dose of caffeine, especially after a sleepless night. Risks can be reduced if a person drinks coffee after breakfast, not before.
