According to the Prime Minister of Georgia, Giorgi Gakharia, if the low rate of new cases of coronavirus is maintained for a week, the process of easing the restrictions will start sooner; Gakharia stated at a government meeting.
"Today, we are discussing how to start opening up the economy quickly but safely.
When we set the restrictions at the end of December, the country's positive rate was extremely high and in some cities even exceeded 20 percent. Today I can tell you that out of 18,000 tests conducted yesterday, only 732 are positive, which is still a large number, although it has already approached 4 percent.
When we have a positive rate of 4%, we can start opening the economy in 7 days, and it seems that today's trends allow us to be optimistic.
This applies primarily to Tbilisi, Kutaisi, and Rustavi, and it certainly applies to educational institutions to enable our children to return to classrooms. Of course, this is accompanied by the launch of municipal transport. We must do this so as not to jeopardize our achievements," Gakharia said.
