Georgia recorded a total of 274 new cases of HIV infections this year, according to the Center of Infectious Pathology and AIDS, while 321 cases were registered last year.

Per the data of 2 June 2020, 8,376 HIV infected persons were registered at the Center of Infectious Pathology and AIDS, out of which 6,252 are male, and 2,124 female patients aged 29-39. A total of 1,705 died.

Per the 30 June data, 5,220 patients (4630 +590 from Abkhazia) are undergoing treatment for HIV, with 46 being children (38 +8 from Abkhazia).

Registered patients were infected in different manners: 37.0% (3098 people) through drugs, 48.7% during heterosexual intercourse, 12% (1001) are men who were infected while having same-sex activity, 1,3% caught vertically transmitted HIV infections, 0.5%(41) during a blood transfusion, while the source of infection for 0.6% have not been determined.

The majority of HIV cases, a total of 3,029 cases, have been registered in Tbilisi, 1,153 in Samegrelo, 1,004 in Imereti, 958 in Adjara, 526 in Abkhazia, 411 in Kakheti, 478 in Kvemo Kartli, 306 in Shida Kartli, 175 in Guria, and 112 in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region.

A total of 116 children, out of whom 70 are male and 46 female were infected in Georgia, 27 died, and three left the country.
