The Tbilisi Zoo is calling upon citizens not to use firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices in connection with the New Year's Day celebrations.
"Please, do not use firecrackers or other similar devices, especially if you live in the vicinity of the zoo. These loud sounds have a lethal effect on animals.
Animals are not only scared of this unusual sound, but they are also stressed and start running wildly, with this often having a fatal effect. Last year, on Dec 31, a newborn gnu suffered a cardiac rupture. Another newborn gnu also died shortly after the new year," The Tbilisi Zoo says.
