Ten years passed since the tragic death of Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili.

Hours before the opening of the Olympics, Georgian Olympic team luger Nodar Kumaritashvili lost control during one of the last practices and crashed into a track board with a speed of 143.3 kilometers per hour on February 12, 2010. As a result, the 21-year-old athlete collided with metal construction.

The ambulance took him to the hospital, but the doctors were not able to save him.

According to the official statement released by the organizers, the tragedy was a result of Kumaritashvili's mistake, not the fault of the track. He was late on the 15th turn and failed to enter the next one properly.

Nodar Kumaritashvili's body was brought to Georgia on February 17 and buried in the churchyard in Bakuriani.

The street where Nodar Kumaritashvili lived now has the name of the Georgian Olympian. The Bakuriani City Council made the decision.

Nodar Kumaritashvili is the fourth athlete in the history who died during the Winter Olympics.
