Georgian currency begins depreciation - who makes mistakes?

After the short-term of gaining value, Georgia's national currency Lari still began depreciation.

The opposition and experts say the National Bank of Georgia is responsible for it, as it cannot ensure the GEL stability.

Head of the National Movement Parliamentary Faction Roman Gotsiridze says the same.

He says the coronavirus was an end of the GEL floating exchange rate, and now Georgia is in a 'managed floating mode.'

In his words, the National Bank will have to implement frequent interventions to neutralize the negative effect caused by deficit spending.

''Otherwise, the Lari will continue depreciation and prices as well,'' he added, stressing that the National Bank of Georgia is 'always late' and must be careful now.

The National Bank of Georgia sold 40 mln GEL on June 10 to support the national currency not to lose value. In total, it has already sold 160 mln GEL.

One USD equals 3.0643 GEL today, while one EUR costs 3.4669 GEL.
