Tengiz Tsertsvadze, the director of the Infectious Diseases, AIDS and Clinical Immunology Research Center, says that the coronavirus affects the respiratory system and may also impact the heart and blood vessels.

"The effects of COVID-19 have been so far unknown. A few studies say that this disease will not go away without leaving negative effects on the body, with one of its consequences being pulmonary fibrosis," Tsertsvadze said.

As for the cardiovascular system, Georgian physicians also plan to study this issue.

"Vein thrombosis and/or pulmonary embolism-related complications are possible. We have already started studying this issue. However, as the pandemic is new, only eight months have passed, we cannot talk about its long-term consequences now. After six months or a year, we will be able to answer this question," Tsertsvadze declared.
