National Movement appeals to court regarding Melia's case

"The United National Movement has appealed the Parliament's decision regarding Nika Melia's termination of his parliamentary mandate in the Constitutional Court," Roman Gotsiridze, the Head of the National Movement told reporters.

The party has appealed to the Constitutional Court of Georgia today.

"Nika Melia's authority was terminated illegally, as other instances could make a different decision. This is obvious political persecution and neutralization of the leader of the party before elections. Every deputy who made this decision will be put on the shame list," Gotsiridze said.

The Procedural Issues and Rules Committee of the Parliament of Georgia supported the replacement of Nika Melia. The Committee discussed the notion of parliamentary authority of Badri Basishvili.

After voting in the Committee, Badri Basishvili's authority should be recognized by the Parliament on a plenary session.

The parliamentary mandate of Nika Melia, the Member of the United National Movement, was suspended on December 12.

The deprivation of Nika Melia's mandate required a vote of 76 deputies. 88 deputies supported the termination of his mandate at the plenary session.
