Police open fire at Anti-Namakhvani rally site, locals say

Tensions were high in the Sakulia village, Tskaltubo municipality, Georgia. Locals say that law enforcement officers opened fire when detaining an Anti-Namakhvani HPP rally participant Irakli Mukbaniani.

The detainee's brother Besik Mukbanian claims the police used excessive force.

''Two injured people were hospitalized after sustaining gunshot wounds by the Makarov gun. The police used excessive force. Irakli Mukbaniani did not flee the site, and the necessity of special forces arriving in the village did not exist,'' Besik Mukbanian declared.

The MIA, however, said in its statement that locals offered resistance to police officers when I.M. was detained; following this, the police applied the corresponding measure in compliance with the legislation.
