"The number of protected areas will increase by 100,000 square meters in 2020," Giorgi Gakharia, the Prime Minister of Georgia, said ahead of a cabinet meeting today.

According to the head of the government, last year, protected areas in the country increased by 10% and equaled 9.6% of the total territory of the country, though this is not enough.

"We decided to create a Urusheti National Park that will be important for the preservation of the Red List species. The Borjomi-Kharagauli Protected Area will expand to 4,000 square meters in order to preserve species more effectively. It is about the Caucasian deer and the chamois in the Red List," Gakharia said.
