Sanctions may be toughened for talking while driving

Sanctions may be stiffened for talking on the phone in the car. In accordance with the legislative package drafted by the MIA, fines will be doubled and hit 60 GEL for talking while driving. For this misdemeanor, 15 penalty points may also be imposed against driving licences.

The same legislative package envisages doubling of fines for speeding, with the corresponding  penalty points imposed against law-breakers' licences.

Drink driving is also set to be sentenced to administrative detention. If drivers are fined twice a year due to drink driving, stiffened sanctions will be imposed on them, with this implying stripping off their driving licence and sentencing them to administrative detention of a maximum of 15 days.

Reportedly, the amount of fines will be dependent on the amount of alcohol in an intoxicated individual's blood: the more alcohol is detected in individuals' blood, the higher fines will be imposed on them.
