Gas import from Azerbaijan meets Georgia's demand

''As we have high economic growth in the country, it means that the consumption of electricity and gas has increased,'' Georgian Economic Minister Natia Turnava said.

In response to a question asked by a report.ge journalist regarding the TANAP hub statistics, Turnava reported on the gas consumption and market assessment.

''Under the preliminary data, in 2019, Georgia consumed 2.6 billion cubic meters of gas. We met 95% of the demand with the gas imported from Azerbaijan. We consumed the amount of gas as a transit country, including the quota received from Shah-Deniz and SOCAR-supplied volume. We purchased only 140 – 160 million cubic meters of gas from Russia, equalling 5% of our market,'' she said.

Georgia will receive more natural gas by 2023 after the TANAP starts operation. The volume of natural gas received for free will be four times more, reaching 1.15 billion cubic meters.

Currently, Georgia receives 300 million cubic meters of free gas, for being a transit country. The volume will reach 1.5 million cubic meters by 2026.
