A total of 26,060 rivers flow in Georgia, with their overall length of 60,000 km. The Mtkvari (Kura) river stands out among them: its length reaches 351 km in the territory of Georgia, while its overall length in Georgia and Azerbaijan is 1,364 km.

The UNDP has informed Report News Agency that, along with the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the sustainable management of the Mrkvari river resources has been planned.

The project is called the UNDP - GEF Kura II and envisages the development of the integrated management of water resources. The Mtkvari Basin Strategic Action Plan has been agreed upon with the Georgian and Azerbaijani authorities. Georgia and Azerbaijan are now working on dividing the Mtkvari.

The GEF is set to channel $5,329,452 into the 4-year project, with the Georgian and Azerbaijani governments having also allocated specific amounts.

The Mtkvari (Kura) is the largest river in Transcaucasia. It rises on the slopes of Mount Kısırındağı in extreme eastern Turkey and cuts northward through the Lesser Caucasus range in a series of gorges with many rapids. Additionally, the Mtkvari is the longest river (906 km) in Azerbaijan.

The Mtkvari basin comprises the entire territory of Armenia, large sections of Azerbaijan and Georgia, and also parts of Turkey and Iran.
