"This year, hazelnuts will be rich and of high quality," Levan Davitashvili, Minister of Environment and Agriculture of Georgia, said during a meeting with farmers in Khobi, Georgia's region Samegrelo.

Governor of Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti, Alexander Motserelia, and the executive director of the Association of Hazelnut Producers of Georgia, George Todua, also participated in the meeting.

The officials discussed the volume of the hazelnut harvest, its quality, and placement and export.

"Recenlty, the hazelnut sector has faced severe challenges. Thanks to the joint work of the state and farmers, these difficulties have been overcome. The 2020 crop will be excellent, both in terms of quantity and quality. Following the trends of this year, a high price is expected in international markets. Consequently, the season 2020-21 must be financially successful for farmers. Notably, harvesting will begin in a few days. The hazelnut sector can play an essential role in our economy. We expect that we will exceed 100 million in monetary terms and get a quality crop of hazelnuts in the amount of 55 thousand tons," Levan Davitashvili said.

Giorgi Todua forecasts that in the current season, the cost of hazelnuts in Georgia will increase by three GEL than in the previous season and will teeter between seven and nine GEL.
