Greece intends to export green hydrogen via TAP

Gas, oil, and construction companies in Greece have joined forces with research institutions and foreign partners to develop the White Dragon project. The project involves the production of hydrogen from solar energy by installing 1.5 GW photovoltaic panels. Greece intends to stop coal use step by step by 2025. The Green Hydrogen project is estimated at 2.5 billion euros, although the figure could rise to 4 billion euros.

The White Dragon project is based on "green hydrogen" technology. Fuels are produced from water using electricity from renewable sources. The transit of green hydrogen must occur through gas pipelines. The project is designed for export through the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP). Green hydrogen will be used as fuel for buses and trucks, as well as for central heating.

By May 7, the European Commission will accept proposals for renewable and low-carbon technologies and solutions from the European Clean Hydrogen Alliance members. Greek companies will submit proposals here. The coalition has already applied to Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI) for status under the Hydrogen Europe project. The further development of the "White Dragon" project depends on whether the European Commission will approve these proposals.
