OPEC ministers have appointed a representative of Kuwait, Haitham al-Ghais, as the organization's Secretary-General. According to Report.ge, the OPEC press service spreads the information.
Haitham al-Ghais led the Kuwaiti delegation to OPEC from 2017 to 2021. He has experience working in oil companies as well as in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kuwait. He graduated from the University of San Francisco, California, in 1990 with a degree in political science. He is fluent in six languages: Arabic, English, German, Portuguese, Spanish, French, and Chinese.
Haitham al-Ghais is set to replace the current head of the cartel, Mohammed Barkindo, who has held the post since 2016. His second term expires in July 2022.
According to the OPEC Charter, the Secretary-General is elected for a term of three years and can be elected only once.
