New Secretary-General of OPEC may be elected today

The ministers of the OPEC countries will hold a meeting on January 3, where they will discuss the candidacy of the new Secretary-General of the organization. According to Report.ge, the OPEC press service spreads the information.

The new Secretary-General is to replace the current head of the cartel, Mohammed Barkindo, next year.

The only candidate for the post so far is the representative of Kuwait, Haitham al-Ghais, who led the Kuwaiti delegation to OPEC from 2017 to 2021.

Mohammed Barkindo has been the Secretary-General of OPEC since 2016, and his second term expires in July 2022. According to the OPEC Charter, the Secretary-General is elected for a term of three years.
