Turkey plans to increase Baku-Tbilisi-Kars cargo turnover

The volume of freight traffic on the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway, an important component of the Asia-Europe transport corridor, has exceeded 1 million 360 thousand tons. The Minister of Transport and Infrastructure of Turkey, Adil Karaismailoğlu, announced the information.

According to him, Ankara aims to increase the volume of Baku-Tbilisi-Kars transportation to 3.2 million tons in the medium term and to 6.5 million tons in the long term.

The head of the Turkish Ministry of Transport noted that thanks to BTK, the importance of Turkey, Georgia, and Azerbaijan in the transportation and trade of international cargo has increased.

"Thanks to the BTK Railway and the Marble Tunnel under the Bosphorus, a railway route from Beijing to London has been established. The middle transport corridor is safe and economical, which drastically reduces delivery time in the Eurasian region. BTK allows the delivery of goods," Karaismailoglu said.

The BTK railway line was put into operation on October 30, 2017, and is another successful project of cooperation between Turkey, Georgia, and Azerbaijan. The length of the BTK railway is 829 km, of which 504 km runs through the territory of Azerbaijan, 246 km - through Georgia, and 79 km - through Turkey.
