The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has released a statement on visiting Doctor Gaprindashvili in the Tskinvali prison.
"Today, on 18 November 2019, at 2 pm, The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) visited Georgian doctor Vazha Gaprindashvili in the Tskhinvali prison. His family contacted the Red Cross on November 14. Having been acting within the scope of its humanitarian mandate, The ICRC demanded that the possibility to visit the doctor be given to it.The ICRC delegates visited Mr Gaprindashvili today. Within the framework of the visit, he was given his family's letter, and he wrote a response letter to the family. The International Committee of the Red Cross has already notified Vazha Gaprindashvili's family of the visit," reads the statement.
Vazha Gaprindashvili has been held in custody by the de facto government of Tskhinvali region since Nov 9. Demonstrations in support of Mr Gaprindashvili have been held in the city and regions. His colleagues and adherents staged a "White Lab Coats Demonstration" outside their clinics.
