A total of GEL 21 mln has been spent on the modernization of the Georgian railway in 2020. The company reports say that by the end of 2020, 93% of modernization works had already been completed, but the completion of the project was delayed, with it now planned to be wrapped up in 2022.

The railway modernization project budget is 248 mln Swiss Francs, with the Georgian Railway funding the project. After its modernization, the transportation process will be simplified, with the transportation capacity climbing from 25 mln tons to 48 mln and 100 mln in the future.

The EU is also providing the Georgian Railway with financial assistance; it has already allocated EUR 1.3 mln to implement the European standards in this field. The GR is set to purchase 100 new wagons and modernize its three electric and six diesel locomotives.

The digitization of the Georgian railway corridor is also being planned. A total of EUR 1000,000 is set to be spent on the computerization of digitization of the transit system, with, roughly speaking, GEL 5-6 mln to be allocated for this purpose initially. Logistics and transport experts have positively evaluated the initiative.
