"The so-called local producers, processing factories cause a quality problem in the Georgian market. There are also smuggling cases, and the [smuggled volume] quality hardly meets standards," said SOCAR Georgia Petroleum Director Levan Giorgadze.ge when explaining the reason for the low quality of fuel in Georgia's market.

Parliamentary Committee for Environment Protection is working to stiffen the fuel quality regulations.

As the committee chairperson, Nino Tsilosani, said the regulations would be much stricter than the current ones.

In her words, those who violate the standard requirements may be held criminally responsible.

SOCAR Georgia Petroleum has evaluated the planned regulations with the request of report.ge.

The company recognizes that the Georgian market has a fuel quality problem. It welcomes the legislative amendments.

Company Director Levan Giorgadze says that the situation in the market will be improved.

''SOCAR welcomes the legislative amendment, and we think it will improve the market situation. The criminal persecution will be allowed if the parameters affect the environment more than the law permits,'' Levan Giorgadze said, adding that all key brands offer high-quality fuel to the Georgian consumers.

"Gasoline and diesel fuel of Euro 5 standard are imported from Europe. Although Euro 4 standard diesel, meeting all the standards in its category, also comes in Georgia from Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan. If we talk about the example of SOCAR, then we have four types of fuel: Nano Premium, Nano Euro Regular, Nano Euro Diesel, and Nano Diesel. The first three categories of fuel are imported from Europe. Factories in Romania and Bulgaria supply them, and they fully comply with the Euro 5 standard. Nano Diesel is imported from Azerbaijan and meets the Euro 4 standard," Levan Giorgadze, Director of SOCAR Georgia Petroleum, said.
