Why is marijuana called green gold?

Last year, the Georgian Government launched an initiative to produce marijuana in Georgia for pharmaceutical and cosmetic use and export it. A draft law was prepared by the Parliament of Georgia but due to widespread protests by the Patriarchate and society the Government withdrew the bill.

Economists and financiers believe the country has lost economical profit considering the severe drug policy in the neighboring countries. Analysts think that the initiative would also boost tourism.

Report.ge found out which countries legalized marijuana cultivation and which countries exported it.

According to the South China Morning Post, marijuana is a real green gold for farmers. By selling one hectare of crops, farmer earns $ 1,500, far exceeding the income from selling corn.

According to a 2018 UN report, the United Kingdom was the world's largest producer of legal cannabis in 2016. UK produced 95 tonnes of marijuana for medical and scientific use.

"I cannot say much about production and export, but the medical use of this plant is acceptable and highly useful. Drugs made by marijuana are used for diseases like epilepsy, diabetes, Parkinson’s and cancer. Although addiction leads to serious problems like brain cancer and a heart attack", Zviad Panjakadze, the Narcologists told report.ge.
