The country's second-largest Lake Tuz in Turkey has completely dried up, phys.org reports.

The publication notes that the total area of the Lake was 1665 square kilometers.

The main reasons for the disappearance of the Lake are climate change and harmful agricultural policies, which have been going on for decades and cause the groundwater supply to disappear.

Experts' findings also indicate that the Lake has dried up completely this year due to rising temperatures, increased evaporation, and lack of rain. They also found that groundwater levels around Lake Tuz had dropped dramatically.

What happened on Lake Tuz can be called an eco-catastrophe, as hundreds of dead flamingos have been found at the bottom of the reservoir.

It is noteworthy that several other lakes have dried up across Turkey. According to climate experts, the entire Mediterranean basin, including Turkey, is at particular risk of severe drought and desertification.
