A 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck near the island of Honshu, Japan, the Central Meteorological Department reported.

The epicenter of the underground damping was at a depth of 50 kilometers near the coast of Aomori.

The earthquake was felt in Iwate and Akita prefectures.

Information on the destruction and casualties has not been released yet. The danger of a tsunami has not been announced.
