Lukashenko: Russia to ensure our security at the first necessity

Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko and Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed on Russia to support the republic at first request and ensure security. The Belarus President talked about it at the meeting at the Strategic Management Center of the Ministry of Defense.

"When it comes to the military component, ally countries, and collective security agreement, the Russian Federation will act in the agreement's frames. The current case is right in compliance with the agreement terms. That is why I held a long and detailed conversation with the Russian President. To tell you the truth, I was surprised – he is clued up about the situation details … We agreed: the security of Belarus will be ensured, and multifaceted support provided at our first request," – said Lukashenko.

On 9 August, presidential election results were publicized in the country, with this followed by mass protest actions. The opposition does not recognize the 80% votes victory of Lukashenko. People took to the streets and protested against Lukashenko's government. Following the crackdown on demonstrators, more than 6,000 were detained, including journalists. Two protesters reportedly died.

On the background of the developments, the world leaders and international organizations expressed concern over the situation in Belarus while the United States and European Union plan new sanctions against the country.
