Since March 2020, more than 1 500 journalists from 77 countries worldwide have died due to coronavirus infection or complications caused by COVID-19, Press Emblem Campaign reports.

A record-high number of media deaths occurred in May of 2021 when the coronavirus killed 200 journalists.

"The new coronavirus was the worst in India. Since March 2020, there have been at least 246 deaths," the organization said in a statement.

Brazil follows India with 239 journalists killed by COVID-19, Peru (163), Mexico (112), and Colombia (65).

According to the Secretary-General of the Press Emblem Campaign, journalists actively cover events related to the coronavirus, so it is one of the most vulnerable groups.
