A study in Singapore found that the newborns of pregnant women with mild symptoms of COVID-19 produced antibodies against the coronavirus. A small study of 16 women also found no evidence of mother-to-child transmission of the virus. NDTV writes about the research.
According to the World Health Organization, pregnant women may be severely affected by respiratory infections. However, it is still unknown whether mothers with COVID-19 can transmit the virus to their babies during pregnancy or childbirth.
"The results of the study were promising," said an obstetrician-gynecologist based in Singapore.
The study also found that most participants dealt with the light form of the virus—more severe reactions developed in older, overweight women.
The researchers said the number of antibodies in the newborns varied and was higher among those whose mothers became infected before birth.
