"The cause of death of Giorgi Shakarashvili is asphyxia with drowning", the General Prosecutor's Office of Georgia spreads the information.
"Given the high public interest, we would like to inform the public about the death of Giorgi Shakarashvili, the results of the medical examination conducted by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and, the legal decision made.
According to the examination, the cause of death of Giorgi Shakarashvili is asphyxia by drowning.
At the same time, Giorgi Shakarashvili's body suffered injuries before death to his forehead/head, both eyelids, upper and lower lip, right elbow joint, and right forearm, as well as abdomen, buttocks and both sides of the waist with the hard-blunt subject. According to the conclusion of the examination, these injuries, each alone, show signs of mild damage to the body. Based on the conclusion of the medical examination and the joint analysis of other evidence in the case, the General Prosecutor's Office of Georgia decided to clarify the qualification of the case on Giorgi Shakarashvili's death. In particular, a premeditated murder committed in aggravating circumstances added to the existing criminal case. The investigation launched under Article 109, Part 2, Subparagraph "e" of the Criminal Code of Georgia. The Ministry of Internal Affairs is investigating the case.
Based on the conclusion of the examination, several investigative and procedural actions should be carried out as quickly and efficiently as possible, including the relevant expert examination to determine the mechanisms and the origin of the injuries mentioned in the report and other important circumstances. Simultaneously, the conclusions of the medical examination of biological, chemical, trasological, information-technological, and other persons' conclusions of medical examination should be done.
Witness surveys and analysis of already obtained information are being conducted. Based on the obtained evidence, they will make a relevant legal decision, and Giorgi Shakarashvili's family and the public will be provided with detailed information from time to time. The Prosecutor's Office of Georgia, considering the high public interest in the case, will provide the public with detailed information in the future, but a consultation with Giorgi Shakarashvili's family will take place in advance.
Given the complexity and sensitivity of the case, the prosecutor's office is urging everyone to refrain from spreading false information to allow the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia to conduct an investigation and, consequently, the Prosecutor's Office to make legal decisions, to establish the truth about the case and hold the perpetrators accountable.
