Nikoloz Basilashvili's lawyer Irma Chkadua has addressed the ombudsman, calling on her to keep an eye on posts actively being written on Facebook after Basilashvili beat Roger Federer.
In the lawyer's words, her client's presumption of innocence has been violated, as the court verdict in his case has not yet been rendered.
Irma Chkadua says that after the Georgian No.1 ranked tennis player defeated Federer, some non-governmental organizations demanded his disqualification from the tournament.
"No single court has yet found Basilashvili guilty of domestic violence. Unfortunately, these non-governmental organizations are seeking to use the situation to their advantage by getting grants. I urge the public defender to protect her country's most successful sportsman Basilashvili, whose presumption of innocence has been breached and who has repeatedly been subjected to hate speech," Chkadua declared.
Yesterday, Basilashvili beat Federer in the Doha quarterfinals, dismantling him 3-6, 6-1, 7-5.
