"We are deeply concerned about the proposal to Parliament to abolish the Office of the State Inspector. It is an independent institution that plays a key role in preventing torture and protecting confidentiality," the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights statement said.
"We call on them to take the initiative and ensure the independence of the national human rights mechanisms," the statement reads.
The draft law, which envisages the establishment of the State Inspector's Office as two independent agencies, will be presented at the sitting of the Parliamentary Bureau today. The authors of the draft request an expedited review of the legislative initiative, which should be decided by the Bureau.
