The U.S. Ambassador to Georgia Kelly Degnan met the Public Defender Nino Lomjaria and expressed the Embassy's support for the Ombudsman's Office, the U.S. Embassy in Georgia said in a statement.
"Ambassador Kelly Degnan met with Public Defender Nino Lomjaria to convey the U.S. Embassy's support for her critically important work. The Public Defender's Office is an essential independent institution for protecting human rights and democratic development in Georgia. We are concerned about politicized attacks on the Public Defender's Office, which damage this important institution and undermine its effectiveness. We encourage Parliament to engage constructively with the Public Defender's Office and support its role in protecting the rights of all the people of Georgia," reads the statement.
The Public Defender of Georgia Nino Lomjaria met with Ambassador Kelly Degnan on March 22.
