Leader of the 'Prosperous Armenia' political party Gagik Tsarukyan has been sentenced to detention, local media say.

Gagik Tsarukyan faces charges with vote-buying, i.e., forcing the voter to divulge the ballot results, checking the ballot list to reveal the results of the vote, entering the ballot booth as well as breaching the confidentiality of the voting otherwise, the Public Radio of Armenia reports.

Reports say Tsarukyan's lawyer Samvel Dilbandyan assessed the decision as "illegal," adding the party would address the upper court.

Earlier in June, the National Assembly of Armenia voted in favor of stripping Tsarukyan of parliamentary immunity.
